Caravansary had various functions in old Tbilisi. The multistory building was utilized as a hotel, warehouse and an inn. The caravansaries that came up to day were constructed in 19th century. Some of them are used for residential purposes. At present the museum of history of Tbilisi is disposed in one of the most significant caravansary -called Artsruni. Caravansary got its name from the owner as it was constructed on the base of the caravansary built during Rostom king reign in first half of the 19th century by Geurk agha Artsrun. 33 guest rooms, 25 inns and warehouses were disposed in the caravansary at first. The fire of 1855 damaged the building a great deal and resulted in its alteration. The caravansary kept its previous functions till 1920. The courtyard of the building was the central part of the caravansary. In 1948 it was roofed with an arch style roof. The courtyard is shielded with two storey warehouses. Its facades belongs to various periods and styles. The façade facing the river bank dates back to 1820 and is a clear example of the Russian classicism. The façade that faces Sioni street consists of the elements of modernism. The basements of Rostom king time are still kept in the building. Despite the constant exposition on the first floor , the caravansary often hosts various sorts of exhibitions and presentations.
