St. George’s Feast


On November 23 the orthodox church of Georgia celebrates St. George’s day. The liturgical ceremonies are conducted in all churches  since morning on that day. On November 23 ( according to the  Julian calendar the  feast  is held  on November 10 and falls on November 23  ). The day of St. George’s torturing on the wheel is marked.

The cult of St. George who lived  Cappadocia  was tortured for Christianity is widespread throughout the world.  He is adorned not only by  Christians but also people of other  beliefs : Catholics, protestants,  Gregorian and  monotheists. St. George  is even mentioned in the   Koran.

St. George has been adorned in a special way by the Georgians since the ancient time.  Lots of churches are built  in Georgia  that bear his name. Around 20 churches bear the name of St. George in Tbilisi and they are always overcrowded by the parish  on St. George feast.
November 23 is considered to be  the day of adoration  and respect of the Saint, for St. George’s day is a  triple celebration only in Georgia.

The liturgical ceremony at the orthodox churches  on this day is quite special   to be watched and attended, one is feeling  closer to God and to the adorned saint. The splendid ceremony  attracts everybody with its saintly devotion . Churches resound to the prayers of the parish and priests and one feels how his prayers are comings true and belief grows at hearing the psalms by the church group.
